A cool place to go to school

y preschool2Parents like the Waynesboro YMCA preschool program because “they know that we care,” preschool director Rebecca Patton said.

“There are places you can go that are high-tech. You don’t come here for that. You come here for the quality of care. Your kids are loved, they’re welcomed. We have kids from all backgrounds. Single-parent homes, grandparents raising kids. All in one mixing bowl,” Patton said.

Patton has been the Y preschool for 10 years, her first seven years as a preschool teacher.

“I love being able to do stuff with the kids. That’s why I do so much stuff in the classroom. It was a hard transition to give up my room,” said Patton.

The school serves children between the ages of 2 years, 9 months to 5 years. The program features a structured educational environment, with focus on letters and numbers, a visit to the Waynesboro Public Library next door for storytimes every Monday and educational field trips once a month during the school year and once a month in the summer.

Patton also oversees the Y’s afterschool and summer programs for school-age children up to age 12. The afterschool-program schedule includes homework time, arts and crafts, supervised time in the gym upstairs and swimming in the Y indoor pool two days a week.

All told, the programs at the Y are licensed for 90 children in the school year and over 100 in the summer with an offsite program at nearby Berkeley Glenn Elementary School that has 30 students.

Applications for the summer program are being accepted now.
