It’s yoga time

February 19, 2010 by YMCA · Leave a Comment

yogaYoga will relax you for the hour or two that you’re practicing it. And as you get into it more, yoga will change your life.

“What I learn in the time that I spend on my mat is I take what I get there and use it throughout my day. It’s been a real profound thing for me,” said Carrie Shuler, the yoga instructor at the Waynesboro Family YMCA.

Shuler teaches intermediate-level yoga classes at the Y on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10-11:30 a.m. and another class on Wednesdays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. that is aimed at beginners.

The benefits to yoga classes are twofold – there is a serious exercise benefit to the variety of stretches that are employed in the classes, and then there’s the meditative aspect to yoga that will change your life.

“I think it’s definitely a great way to find some relaxation in the body. Stretching and breathing is so good for relaxing the central nervous system, not to mention relaxing the mind. I know that in my own personal experience, I feel calmer, kind of more at peace. I’m gentler with people around me,” Shuler said.

February 15, 2010 by YMCA · Leave a Comment

wenonah2More than 150 members of the Wenonah Elementary School family turned out for the Wenonah Family Night at the Waynesboro YMCA on Jan. 29.

“That’s huge,” said Wenonah principal Rebecca Jarvis. “We have a relatively small school population, but we had a great turnout. We had a lot of students and families, and we had a lot of staff as well.”

The event gave the Wenonah family an opportunity to learn more about the YMCA and what it has to offer in terms of facilities and programs. Read more

bike-race-2Call it the Waynesboro Ironman. The Tri for the Y, scheduled for Sunday, June 6, features a 400-meter swim, a challenging 15-mile bike ride, then finishes up with a 5K run along the South River.

Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

“We didn’t exactly shy away from making this challenging. We want to make this a legitimate event,” said Lee Robertson, a partner in Elevation Athletics, which is sponsoring the Tri for the Y sprint triathlon with the YMCA.

Registrations are being taken for the event. Signup information is available on the Tri for the Y website and on a Facebook page set up for the event. Read more

Bloodmobile at the Y

va blood servicesThe weather is affecting all of our schedules. It’s also affecting the ability of local hospitals to keep up with blood-donation needs.

“We are not ready to claim a crisis or emergency situation, but we are feeling the effects of the weather,” said Brian Chandler with Virginia Blood Services, which is partnering with the Waynesboro YMCA on a bloodmobile drive set for Monday, Feb. 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The recent run of back-to-back-to-back snowstorms have forced the cancellation of more than 50 Virginia Blood Services blood drives in the past two weeks, equating to the loss of 1,000 blood donations. Read more

Free H1N1 flu shots at the Y

February 11, 2010 by YMCA · Leave a Comment

health-care2The Waynesboro Health Department and the Waynesboro YMCA are teaming up to offer free H1N1 flu shots on Saturday, Feb. 13.

The flu shots will be done in the Lucy Coyner Gymnasium at the YMCA from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The relative silence on H1N1 in recent weeks isn’t a sign that we’re out of the woods as far as the possible spread of the flu virus.

“The flu isn’t over with yet. It’s still going around. It’s tapered off, but we still highly recommend that people get vaccinated,” said Melissa Donahue, the Medical Reserve Corps coordinator for the Central Shenandoah Health District.

People receiving the free vaccines will be asked to fill out an information form before they can get their vaccines.

Donahue estimates the time for the whole process, from signup to receiving the vaccine, at about two minutes per person.

kidsplace2Let’s say you’re a parent, and you want to go down to the YMCA for a morning or evening workout, but your spouse is at work, you don’t want to go to the trouble of finding a babysitter just to go sweat for an hour …

So you think, I give up. I can’t just take the kids to the Y and leave them there while I do Nautilus and the treadmill.

Actually, yes, you can.

“A lot of people still don’t know that we’re here,” said Melody Mendicino, the director of YMCA Kids Place, which provides childcare weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4-7:30 p.m., and on Friday nights and Saturday mornings by appointment.

Kids Place takes infants as young as six weeks old and preteens up to 12 or 13. Read more
