It’s yoga time

yogaYoga will relax you for the hour or two that you’re practicing it. And as you get into it more, yoga will change your life.

“What I learn in the time that I spend on my mat is I take what I get there and use it throughout my day. It’s been a real profound thing for me,” said Carrie Shuler, the yoga instructor at the Waynesboro Family YMCA.

Shuler teaches intermediate-level yoga classes at the Y on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10-11:30 a.m. and another class on Wednesdays from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. that is aimed at beginners.

The benefits to yoga classes are twofold – there is a serious exercise benefit to the variety of stretches that are employed in the classes, and then there’s the meditative aspect to yoga that will change your life.

“I think it’s definitely a great way to find some relaxation in the body. Stretching and breathing is so good for relaxing the central nervous system, not to mention relaxing the mind. I know that in my own personal experience, I feel calmer, kind of more at peace. I’m gentler with people around me,” Shuler said.

Wenonah Family Night a big success

wenonah2More than 150 members of the Wenonah Elementary School family turned out for the Wenonah Family Night at the Waynesboro YMCA on Jan. 29.

“That’s huge,” said Wenonah principal Rebecca Jarvis. “We have a relatively small school population, but we had a great turnout. We had a lot of students and families, and we had a lot of staff as well.”

The event gave the Wenonah family an opportunity to learn more about the YMCA and what it has to offer in terms of facilities and programs. Read more

Tri for the Y

bike-race-2Call it the Waynesboro Ironman. The Tri for the Y, scheduled for Sunday, June 6, features a 400-meter swim, a challenging 15-mile bike ride, then finishes up with a 5K run along the South River.

Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

“We didn’t exactly shy away from making this challenging. We want to make this a legitimate event,” said Lee Robertson, a partner in Elevation Athletics, which is sponsoring the Tri for the Y sprint triathlon with the YMCA.

Registrations are being taken for the event. Signup information is available on the Tri for the Y website and on a Facebook page set up for the event. Read more
