SMAC wins Small Team titles at state meet

Last weekend, the Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club 14-and-under swimmers competed in the Virginia State Age Group Championship. SMAC was able to win both the men’s and women’s Team titles in the Small Team division.

SMAC was also able to finish above many medium and large teams in the state.

Thirty teams overall competed in the meet.

SMAC qualified and sent the following 18 swimmers to this meet: Jessie Arnold (age 14), Braelin Fauber (10), Alexander Flowers (12), Olivia Heeb (14), Colleen Higgens (13), CJ Higdon (14), Norah Hunt (13), Hunter McMillion (14), Jordan Miller (13), Ella Pickering (10), Brazil Rule (13), Remedy Rule (14), Tate Snyder (10), Madison Tegan (14), Max Tempkin (13), Kristen Wagner (9), Gannon Willcutts (14) and Libby Young (10).

Highlights of the meet included: SMAC winning its fourth consecutive Long Course Age Group Championship in the small team division (less than 100 team members). SMAC qualifying enough swimmers to field two relay teams in the girls 13-14 age group, one in the boys 13-14 age group and one in the girls 10 and underage group. Arnold dominated the distance freestyle events winning the mile, 800 and 400. Her mile time was a new meet record and SMAC record and her 800 was a new SMAC record. She also placed second in the 200 free and third in the 100 back.

Higdon was also strong in the distance freestyle events placing first in the mile, second in the 800 and third in the 400. He set new SMAC records in the mile and 800. R. Rule anchored the relay teams and won the only individual event she swam, the 50 free. Her 50 free was a new SMAC record. Hunt, despite being on the lower end of her age group, placed third in the mile, second in the 800, third in the 400, seventh in the 200 fly and eighth in the 200 free.

Flowers placed fifth in the 400 free and seventh in the 200 free. McMillion placed fourth in the mile and seventh in the 100 fly.

SMAC had over 65% lifetime best times and many swimmers lowered their times by large margins.
