SMAC starts season with Smith Mountain Lake Open Water Swim

The Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club, which practices at the Waynesboro Y, started the 20011/12 season off with an open-water 5k and 1-mile race in the chilly waters at Smith Mountain Lake Sept. 24-25.

The SMAC swimmers participating in the 5k (3.1 mile) race and the 1-mile race were Jessie Arnold, Alexis Brooks, Bobby Carey, Alexander Flowers, Colleen Higgens, Norah Hunt, Jordan Miller, Brazil Rule, Savanna Scarbrough, Elizabeth Terrell and Logan Terrell. The swimmers competing in the mile were Margo Flanders, Sarah Loomis and Maggie Riggan.

This was the first open-water swim for many of the swimmers, and all did an amazing job by finishing the grueling races. Each swimmer had to negotiate their way around six orange buoys, and most ended up swimming much further than the posted distance since it is very difficult to swim in a straight line in the open water.

Arnold (14 years old) was the star of the weekend as she was the first female competitor to finish the 5k and the 1-mile swim. Her closest competitor was teammate Hunt (13 years old), who was the second-place finisher in the woman’s 5k and 1 mile. Rule was the sixth overall in the mile and second to Hunt in the 13-and-under age group.
