SMAC Dominates the Distance Events at the Hokie Fall Invite

Waynesboro Family YMCA

The Waynesboro Family Y Swim Team, (SMAC) swam at the Hokie Fall Swim Meet November 9-11.  The meet was attended by teams from all over Virginia and a few from Maryland and North Carolina.     SMAC started out the meet by blowing away the competition in the 1,000 yard freestyle on Friday night.  SMAC placed first and second in the girls 12 and under, 13/14 and 15 and over age groups while the boys placed first and third in the 15 and over age group.  SMAC finished with close to 50% best times which is very good for this time of the season (in the middle of a very strenuous training cycle).   SMAC only took their older swimmers to the meet and it is more difficult for older swimmers to have best times without any type of rest before the meet.  Overall it was a very successful meet and showed that the Team is ahead of where they were at this time last year.

SMAC brought the following 24 swimmers to the meet: Jessie Arnold (age 15), Matt Bihl (17),  Alexis Brooks (15), Mackenzie Carter (13), Bobby Carey (15), Colleen Higgins (14), Norah Hunt (14), Steven Jenny (18), Alexander Flowers (14), Sarah Loomis (12), Hunter McMillion (15), Justin Merritt (15), Jordan Miller (14), Cody Niles (17), Maggie Riggan (13), Brazil Rule (14), Remedy Rule (16), Alex Rayle (17), Charlotte Rumsey (12), Savannah Scarbrough (14), Madison Tegen (15), Logan Terrell (14), Elizabeth Terrell (14), and  Keelin Wolfe (15).

Highlights of the meet included: 3 second place finishes by Arnold in the girls 15 and over 1,000 free, 500 free and 200 back, 2 first place finishes by Hunt in the girls 13/14 age group in the 1,000 free and 500 free and 2 second place finishes in the 100 and 200 fly, 3 second place finishes by Loomis in the girls 12 and under 1,000 free, 100 fly and 200 IM and a first place in the 500 free, 2 first place finishes by Rayle in the men’s 15 and over 1,000 free & 200 IM and 2 second place finishes in the 100bk and 400 IM, 1 first place finish in the 13/14 girls age group for Brazil Rule in the 200 free and 2 second place finishes in the 500 free and 1,000 free, 7 first place finishes in the girls 15 & over age group for older sister Remedy in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 1000 free, 100 bk, 200 IM and 400IM, and 4 first place finishes and 3 second place finishes by Rumsey in the 12 & under girls 100 free, 1,000 free, 100 breast, 100 fly & 50 free, 200 bk and 200 breast.

Other highlights included the number of best times achieved by the swimmers.  A best time is the fastest a swimmer has ever swam in a specific event.  The swimmers listed below had at least 5 best times at the meet: Carter (5), Hunt (6), Merritt (5), Riggan (5), Rumsey (6), Scarbrough (6), Tegen (6), Logan Terrell (6), and Lizzy Terrell (7).
