SMAC Swims at Holiday Meets in Carey, NC and Christiansburg, VA

The Waynesboro Y Swim Team (SMAC) competed in two separate Holiday Meets the weekend before Christmas.  The swimmers in the National Training Group at the Y traveled to the TYR Capital Classic Meet in Carey NC and competed against other YMCA teams from the entire East Coast.  The remainder of the SMAC swimmers traveled to Virginia Tech to compete in the Hokie Christmas Meet.  The swimmers attending the meet in Carey, NC included: Jessie Arnold (age 15), Bobby Carey (15), Colleen Higgins (14), Norah Hunt (14), Steven Jenny (18), Alexander Flowers (14), Hunter McMillion (15), Justin Merritt (15), Jordan Miller (14), Cody Niles (17), Brazil Rule (14), Remedy Rule (16), Alex Rayle (17), Savannah Scarbrough (14), Max Tempkin (15) and Jake Zamalis (15).

The highlight of the meet was the girls relay team qualifying for Y Nationals in all 5 of the relay events (200 free, 200 IM, 400 Free, 400 IM and 800 free).  Members of the relay team include Arnold, R. Rule, B. Rule, Hunt, & Higgins.   Other highlights included: Arnold finishing 2nd in the 500 free and mile, 4th  in 100 back, 5th in 200 back and 6th in 200 free, Arnold is now only the 2nd female SMAC swimmer in history (over 40 years) to break 5 minutes in the 500 free (R. Rule is other), Flowers 8th in mile, Hunt 4th in mile, 5th in 500 free and 7th in 200 free, Rayle 7th in 200 back, 10th in 200IM and 200 breast, B. Rule 7th in the mile and 8th in 100 free and  R. Rule 1st in the 100 back, 200IM, 200 fly, 200 back and 400 IM.   SMAC swimmers swam to numerous lifetime best times at the meet: Arnold led the way with 9 best times followed by Jenny, Merritt, Rayle & Tempkin with 6, Hunt & B. Rule with 5, Higgins & Carey with 4 and Niles and Flowers with 3.

Highlights of the Hokie Meet included: Rumsey finishing 1st in the 100 free, 200 free, 100 breast, 50 fly, 100 fly, 100 IM & 200 IM and 2nd in the 20 breast, Fauber: 2nd in 50 back & 50 fly, 4th in 100 back & 100 IM, 5th in 100 free, 200 free & 100 fly and 6th in 200 back, M. Fitzgerald: 4th in 100 fly, C. Johnson: 4th in 500 free, 6th in 200 free, 100 back & 100 IM and 8th in 50 back and 50 fly, M. Riggan: 10th 200 breast,  J. Prucha: 1st 500 free & 25 fly, 2nd 100 free & 50 fly, 5th 100 IM,  Pickering: 9th 50 fly, Snyder: 3rd 100 fly & 200 fly, 7th 100 free & 100 IM, 8th 200 free, 9th 50 fly, 10th 100 back,  H. Shifflett: 10th 100 back, 5th 50 breast,  Wagner: 1st 50 back, & 500 free, 2nd 200 free & 200 IM, 3rd 100 back, 100 fly, 50 fly & 100 free, 4th 50 fly & 5th 100 breast, Woodworth: 3rd 500 free, 6th 200 IM & 50 back, 7th 100 back, 8th 200 free, 100 free, 9th 100 breast & 100 IM, 10th 50 fly and Young: 4th 400 IM, 8th 50 breast, 9th 200 IM & 10th 100 fly.  SMAC also swam to many lifetime best times at the meet: Fauber and Wagner led the way with 9 best times followed by Abby Prucha with 8, Swimmers with 7 best times included: Rumsey, Snyder, Tegen, E. Wade and Young, 6 best times: Hubbard, E. Johnson, Loomis, M. Riggan, and Shifflett, 5 best times: Aldridge, M. Fitzgerald, Pickering, B. Prucha, L. Terrell, & Wolfe, and those with 4 best times included Carter, H. Johnson, Murie, J. Prucha, E. Terrell, K. Wade and Woodworth.

Congratulations to all of the swimmers on very successful Mid Season Meets.   The Team will now begin  training for the end of short course (25 yard pools) season meets  that will occur in March and April.
