“I’ve heard from people with concerns about ‘dropping the C,’ as some have phrased it. But ‘Christian’ is still in our mission statement. It’s just not in the name anymore,” said Jeff Fife, the executive director of the Waynesboro Y.

The YMCA of the USA announced last month that it was updating its brand to now call itself the Y. Ys across the country will be transitioning to the new brand over the next five years.

The idea behind the change is to align the Y brand with the terminology that people usually use to refer to the organization.

“We are changing how we talk about ourselves so that people better understand the benefits of engaging with the Y,” said Kate Coleman, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of YMCA of the USA. “We are simplifying how we describe the programs we offer so that it is immediately apparent that everything we do is designed to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve health and well-being and support our neighbors and the larger community.”

“The intent of this change is to bring us all together and refocus us better as to who we are as an organization,” Fife said.

The move was made after an exhaustive market analysis done by the YMCA of the USA that found as good news that the Y logo was the second most recognizable logo among consumers in the United States, and as the not-so-good news that people had a hard time explaining what the Y’s mission was.

The rollout of the new logo and brand coincides with a national effort aimed at raising public awareness of the Y’s core values in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

“This is a very important, exciting time for the Y,” said Neil Nicoll, president and CEO of YMCA of the USA. “For 160 years, we’ve focused on changing lives for the better. Our commitment to building greater awareness for the important work we do will enable us to expand our efforts and further strengthen communities across the country.”

“It’s not about changing who we are or what we do. We see this as an opportunity to celebrate who we are and to celebrate the diversity of our organization,” Fife said.

The 10-week summer program for children ages kindergarten through age 12 has given young Y members the opportunity to not only take walking field trips to the park pool, but they have also gone to Kline’s for ice cream, gone bowling, gone to the library, visited a peach orchard and ventured to the Safari Park. The staff also held an ’80s week for the kids.

The leaders of the summer camp have their hands full with about 70 children at the YMCA location and 25 kids at the satellite location at Berkeley Glenn Elementary School. For Rebecca Patton, the childcare director at the Y, who has been working with the program for 10 years, “it’s a lot of work, but the kids love the field trips.”

The youngsters are in for a treat when they go on their finale field trip to Massanutten Water Park. The younger kids will be heading to Pump It Up in Harrisonburg to play on the inflatables. There will also be a summer block party to end the summer that is open to the community.

The program does not stop when the summer ends. There is an afterschool program that will pick up students from all Waynesboro city schools, plus Ladd Elementary, Stump Elementary, Stuarts Draft Elementary, Hugh K. Cassell Elementary and Faith Primary.

The students will be picked up and brought back to the Waynesboro Y, where they will have time for homework, playing on the playground or in the gym, and snacks. Twice a week, the kids will be able to swim, and on days the school are closed, the program is open all day long for kids to come and hang out.

Tuition for the after school program is $41 per week if you are a member and your child will be attending full-time (4-5 days per week), and $47 if you are not a member and your child is attending full time. Part-time tuition (1-3 days per week) for members is $35 per week for members and $45 per week for those who are not members.

Parent/Child: 6 Months to 3 Years

This program gives parents and their infants/toddlers an early introduction to water safety and swimming.　 Instructors provide individual and group activities to help promote water safety knowledge and practices, aquatic adjustment and readiness skills, fun in the water, and interaction and socialization.　 Parent/child classes require that one parent be in the water with the child at all times. Class is 30 minutes long.

Preschool: Age 3 to Kindergarten

These beginning classes provide a child’s first experience in the pool without parents. Children learn the basic building blocks of swimming, and they are exposed to pool safety, boating safety, and personal flotation devices.

Pike: Designed for children with no previous water experience. This class is a gradual general water orientation utilizing creative water play, breath control, floating, basic arm and kicking skills, and safety skills.　 Class is 30 minutes long.

Eel: For children who can put their head underwater voluntarily. This class introduces alternate/symmetrical front and back paddle skills, breath control, and safety skills. Class is 30 minutes long.

Ray: Refines the skills learned in Pike/Eel classes. This class introduces rotary breathing and the use of personal flotation devices.　 Treading water, elementary backstroke, front and back crawl 25 yards without assistance. Class is 30 minutes.

Starfish: Swimmers develop their front crawl backstroke, floating, underwater swimming, and retrieving skills. Class is 30 minutes.

Youth: First Grade to 12 Years

These classes for school-age children focus on water safety and stroke skills. Classes expand synchronized swimming and water polo skills at each level. All youth swimming lessons are 30-45 minutes long.

Polliwog: Gradual water orientation, breath control, floating, basic arm and kicking skills, personal safety skills, lifesaving skills, survival float, and confidence building are emphasized at this level.

Guppy: Refining skills learned in Polliwog. Introduction of alternate/symmetrical front and back paddle, and rotary breathing.　 Helps build endurance and confidence.

Minnow: Mastering front crawl, rotary breathing and increased endurance. Continuation of back crawl, elementary backstroke, and survival skills.

Fish: Students perform the crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Also includes an introduction to the Dolphin Kick and basic Butterfly.

Flying Fish: Advanced swimmers refine their strokes and increase their endurance. They develop the ability to perform complex swimming activities.

New: Porpoise Club

This is a non-competitive swim club for children ages 6-14 that have passed the YMCA flying fish swim level or a 100 yard swim test given by the Porpoise Club coach. The Porpoise Club will focus on building the swimmers endurance and improving their stroke technique, while emphasizing teamwork. Games will be a part of each session. M/F – 4:30-5:15 p.m. Start August 30 to November 12. M:$125 P:$175

Private Swim Lessons

Individual swim lessons provide extra personal instruction and attention in order to improve stroke technique and develop more proficient swimmers. Lessons are geared toward basic, correct body position and introduction to various swimming strokes.

Private swim lessons are available for youth and adults ages 3 and older. Lessons are conducted 1-on-1 with a trained YMCA swim instructor. Due to popularity of private lessons and limited instructor availability, advanced planning and reservations are required. Please contact the Waynesboro Family YMCA’s aquatics department for more information.

1 30-minute session: Y Member: $18 / CP: $36

3 30-minute sessions: Y Member: $50 / CP: $100

4:30-minute sessions: Y Member: $67 / CP: $135

6 30-minute sessions: Y Member: $95 / CP: $185

Semi-Private Lessons

Do you have family or friends that are interested in learning to swim in a class together? Private group lessons are geared for small groups of similar swim levels to learn in a group environment. Lessons focus on improving stroke technique and proficiency in various strokes. Please see our Member Service Center for more information.

What Level is My Child?

All students who have never enrolled in swim lessons – and without any swimming skills – must sign-up for Pike or Polliwog, depending on their age. Swim evaluations are required for all children other than beginners.

If children have completed a level at another YMCA, please ask that YMCA to provide written proof. The first day of class your child may be moved to a class which best fits their swimming ability. Each class requires three participants to be offered.
