Y swimmer named state swimmer of year
Remedy Rule, a freshman at Western Albemarle High School, won the 2010/11 swimmer of the year award at the Virginia Swimming awards banquet held on Oct. 2 in Richmond.
Rule was named the female swimmer of the year in the 13/14 year old age group. This is the third consecutive year she has won the award for the top swimmer in her age group in Virginia. Rule swims year-round for the Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club at the Waynesboro YMCA.
She set 21 SMAC Team Records this year, 12 in short course (25 yard pools) and 9 in long course (50 meter pools). She also broke 4 short course state records (500 free, 100 back, 200 back and 200 fly) and 5 long course state records (200 free, 100 back, 200 back, 100 fly and 200 fly). She is the only 14-and-under female in Virginia to have ever swum under two minutes in the 200y back or the 200y fly. Read more

SMAC: ‘Rich tradition and history’
Norm Wright had heard of the Waynesboro YMCA long before he ever applied for the job as head aquatics director and head coach of the Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club there.
“The rich tradition of swimming here in Waynesboro and the surrounding area dates back to the mid-’60s, and when you walk in the Y, you see the pictures on the walls and the records and plaques of everything. It’s really a very inviting, rich tradition and history here in Waynesboro – something that can provide some opportunities for futures to come,” said Wright, who is wrapping up his first season at the helm at the Y, and what a successful season it has been.
One of his swimmers, 14-year-old Remedy Rule, has qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic trials. SMAC recently won Small Team state titles in both the men’s and women’s divisions at the Virginia State Age Group Championship. And the future is looking bright. Read more
