Former Waynesboro YMCA chairman of the board and 2007 YMCA Hall of Fame inductee Jacob Kirkwood “Kirk” Snell passed away on Wednesday. Snell was 89.
Snell settled in Waynesboro with his wife, Virginia, in 1954, when the Westhills Company located in Waynesboro with the new General Electric plant. In 1977, he received the Stienmetz Award, the highest award given internally by GE, for the development of the Terminet printer, which became a million-dollar business for the Waynesboro plant. Ladies only
They kicked the guys out 20 years ago. That was when you could tell that the Wild Walleyball Women of Waynesboro were getting serious.
“Twenty years is a long time,” said Tuck Rogers, one of the founding members of the walleyball club, which can actually trace its roots back 21 years, first playing together on the racquetball court at the Waynesboro YMCA in 1989.
The original three – Rogers, Jan Leeth and Sue Pauly – met while talking a walleyball class being offered at the Y. They stuck it out in the class for men and women for a few months before deciding “that we didn’t really need to pay to take lessons anymore,” Leeth said. Read more
Y loses a beloved member of the family
The Waynesboro YMCA lost a beloved member of its family on Saturday with the passing of Russell Culver, 74, who died on Saturday, April 17, after a battle with cancer.
Culver had been a member of the YMCA staff since 2002. He worked in the fitness center and also led new members on tours of the facility.
He was born in Manchester, Conn., on March 1, 1936. Culver grew up in Buckland, Conn., and served in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. Read more
Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR and AID class at the Y
The Waynesboro YMCA and the American Red Cross are teaming up to offer a course in lifeguard training, first aid, professional CPR and AID training in May.
This course gives lifeguard training candidates the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. You must be 15 years old by completion of class.
No classes can be missed.
